Women’s T-shirts made from linen, cotton & modal
The classic women’s T-shirt forms the basis for almost any look, but for us it’s more than just a simple basic. At hessnatur, we’ve been following a clear philosophy since 1976: our clothing adapts to your skin and meets your expectations in terms of both materials and production. A large part of the collection consists of naturally sourced fibres such as cotton and linen. Wherever possible, the fibres we use come from certified organic farming or certified organic animal husbandry. The result is T-shirts that focus on material selection and craftsmanship, designed to suit you.
Women’s cotton and linen T-shirts – naturally comfortable
If you’re looking for the right cotton T-shirt, subtle differences can make all the difference to how you feel:
- Benefits of cotton: Our organic cotton fibre is naturally breathable and feels comfortable against the skin. For our GOTS-certified garments, the standard sets out clear criteria for the use of certain chemicals, which means the natural fibre structure can be largely preserved.
- Fits: Fashion adapts to you, not the other way round. In our collection, you’ll find a variety of cuts, from the classic regular fit and the casual relaxed fit to modern, generous oversized cuts.
- Colour palette: Our range extends from timeless, plain-coloured shirts to shades inspired by nature. These colours can be combined in many different ways and are ideal for a capsule wardrobe.
Our standards for materials and production: from organic quality to the GOTS label
When we started out in 1976, organic fashion was still a niche concept. We regard the life cycle of a garment as an important part of its creation. We see every fibre as part of this life cycle, which we monitor carefully.
What is the difference between organic cotton and conventional cotton?
The difference lies where it is often not immediately apparent: in the way the cotton is grown. Conventional cotton is frequently grown in monocultures using artificial fertilisers and pesticides. This can have a detrimental effect on soil and aquatic ecosystems.
Organic cotton grown under certified organic farming practices (kbA) relies instead on natural crop rotation and organic pest control. Depending on growing conditions, the soil’s water retention capacity can improve. Whilst the global share of organic cotton stands at around 2.9 per cent (source: Textile Exchange Organic Cotton Market Report 2025 for the 2023/24 harvest year), we at hessnatur have been using organic cotton from certified organic cultivation for many years.
GOTS certification: What does it mean?
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) audits the textile supply chain from fibre to finished product against defined environmental and social criteria. From the processing of the raw fibre, through dyeing with GOTS-approved dyes, to the final garment, every stage of production is assessed against the standard’s environmental and social criteria.
A T-shirt made from organic cotton bearing the GOTS label meets clearly defined criteria throughout the entire textile supply chain. These include specifications regarding the use of certain substances, such as formaldehyde or heavy metals, as well as minimum social requirements based on the ILO’s core labour standards.

For us, quality arises from a combination of trust and reliable cooperation. That is why we rely on direct partnerships.

The linen shirt – a summer favourite made from natural fibres
As soon as the days get warmer, linen really comes into its own. Flax fibres can absorb a considerable proportion of their own weight in moisture and release it back into the environment. This creates a pleasantly cooling feel when worn. The fact that linen creases characteristically is one of its natural properties.
Long-sleeved T-shirt for women: bridging the seasons
The long-sleeved T-shirt is the versatile staple of your wardrobe, bridging the gap between the seasons:
- Season: During the cooler months, this long-sleeved top serves as a breathable base layer for women, worn under a chunky jumper or a blazer. When the sun regains its strength in spring, it’s just as suitable for wearing on its own.
- Fabric quality: Here, you can feel the pure, natural texture of the flax fibre. The unique fibre structure of linen can have a cooling effect in warm weather, whilst its sturdy quality ensures a comfortable, secure feel against the skin even on cooler days.
- Styling: With a variety of neckline styles, such as the classic round neck, this long-sleeved top can be worn elegantly tucked into the waistband of your trousers or casually over a pair of jeans.
Organic T-shirts: the classic choice
Our organic T-shirts have a high thread count. This generally makes them less see-through.
- Workmanship: We focus on high-quality stitching. This ensures that your shirt retains its shape even after frequent wear and washing.
- Timeless: A well-proportioned V-neck or round neckline is a classic that works regardless of fashion trends.
- Perfect for layering: The fine quality of our organic cotton yarn hugs the body without feeling bulky. This makes our shirts the perfect base layer under cardigans or blouses, ensuring they feel comfortable against the skin.
- Hassle-free: It’s the item you reach for in the morning when you’re short on time. You’ll be out the door in no time and still look put-together.
Linen tops: naturally light & versatile
Our tops do away with all the unnecessary frills and focus on keeping your skin comfortable and offering plenty of ways to wear them.
- Lightweight: The open weave of this natural fibre allows the skin to breathe. Especially in summer, linen ensures a pleasantly airy feel.
- Versatile: Our linen tops are ideal for the office, as well as for leisurely outings in the countryside or your morning yoga session.
Women’s Shirts & Tops: our materials
Our single-fabric shirts are made from pure organic cotton or linen and feel comfortable against the skin. For styles that require a little more freedom of movement, we use elastane sparingly and where necessary. We state this clearly on the product pages.
- Cotton: This fibre is breathable, feels comfortable against the skin and is hard-wearing. Wherever possible, we use organic cotton from certified organic cultivation. Certified organic cultivation prohibits the use of synthetic pesticides and genetic engineering.
- Modal: This cellulose fibre, derived from beech wood, is silky soft, retains its shape well and has an elegant drape that gently skims your silhouette.
- Lyocell: Also known as TENCEL™, this fibre is ideal for warm days. Its smooth, cooling surface absorbs moisture well and dries quickly, ensuring a fresh feel against the skin.
- Virgin wool: Wherever possible, our wool comes from certified organic livestock farming. It can help regulate body temperature, as well as being odour-resistant and stain-resistant.
- Linen: This fibre can have a pleasantly cooling effect and help wick away moisture. It feels comfortable against the skin.
- Elastane: The majority of our shirts are made from fibres of natural origin. For figure-hugging cuts, we use a minimal amount of elastane to ensure a good fit.
Our tip: Linen feels wonderful against the skin, especially on warm days. Discover our range of women’s linen clothing in a colourful variety for light, summery days.
Frequently asked questions about women’s cotton T-shirts
Do you also stock vegan T-shirts for women?
Yes, the majority of our collection is purely plant-based. All T-shirts made from organic cotton, linen, modal or lyocell are free from animal fibres. The GOTS certification regulates which dyes and processing aids may be used, and defines the use of certain substances throughout the production chain. You can tell straight away from the product label whether a product is also completely vegan in its manufacture.
What is the difference between cotton and linen T-shirts?
Cotton is soft and supple and generally retains heat slightly better. Linen, on the other hand, has a firmer weave that drapes around the body rather than clinging to it. Linen wicks away heat well and therefore feels cooler against the skin – both can be comfortable depending on your preference.
What’s the best way to wash a cotton T-shirt?
Ideally at 30 to 40 degrees using a mild detergent. This helps to preserve the fibre structure. You can avoid using the tumble dryer: air-drying is a gentle way to maintain the softness and fit of your organic cotton for a long time.
Does a cotton T-shirt shrink in the wash?
For many of our styles, we avoid using sanforising chemicals, which are not permitted under GOTS standards. As a result, a slight shrinkage of around 3–5 per cent may occur during the first wash – this is normal. We have already taken this into account in our fits. Simply avoid using excessively high temperatures to protect the fabric.
Is a women’s T-shirt made from 100% cotton better than one made from a fabric blend?
Pure organic cotton is considered comfortable against the skin. However, blends with modal or lyocell can be a good choice if you prefer a particularly flowing drape or a cooling surface.
