The challenge: sustainable, yet functional clothing

The management series entitled ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’ published by the Springer Verlag Berlin/Heidelberg includes the volume ‘CSR and sport management. Beyond victory and defeat: understanding and implementing sport as a social function’. In it, the editor Dr. Alexandra Hildebrandt examines the success story of the outdoor sector in her article entitled ‘From want to need. Functional clothing – a sustainable challenge based on the example of hessnatur’, detailing the benefits as well as the toxic effects on people and the environment of synthetic versus natural fibres. She refers, among other things, to the hessnatur wool experiment: the scientific hiking experiment in which participants trialled functional underwear made from merino wool demonstrated that woollen underwear is now high-tech. Furthermore, the author quotes from an interview with Rolf Heimann, Head of the Corporate Social Responsibility department at hessnatur.
